Not So Free, eBay Free Picture Price Change 12 February 2009 By EventHorizon1984
"I’d like to share some news regarding fee changes for eBay-hosted pictures that we’re making in the Collectibles, Art, Antiques and Pottery & Glass categories. The first eBay-hosted picture in an item is already free. Effective February 18, 2009, we are making all additional pictures, Picture Pack and Gallery Plus FREE for listings in all four categories on the US site", Greg Fant, eBay VP of Marketing & Buyer Experience
We wonder if sellers realize that according to eBay's User Agreement, eBay will own the rights to the photos you host on eBay?
When you give us content, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, sublicensable (through multiple tiers) right to exercise the copyright, trademark, publicity, and database rights (but no other rights) you have in the content, in any media known now or in the future.
If you want to know what eBay will do with your photos, here's what follows the User Agreement parargraph above.
For the convenience of sellers, we may offer catalogs of stock images, descriptions and product specifications, which are provided by third-parties.
The catalogs may include copyrighted, trademarked or other proprietary materials.
The reader may wonder why eBay needs "Collectibles, Art, Antiques and Pottery & Glass" photos, when eBay has a ready supply of stock photos available to sellers. The answer is eBay does not have a large supply of stock photos for collectibles.
Yet.
Unless sellers continue to host their own high quality photos, after February 18th eBay will own the rights to a growing supply of royalty-free "Collectibles, Art, Antiques and Pottery & Glass" photos.
Which eBay will gladly loan out to all sellers. Translation for eBay sellers: Give to your competitors.
Really think about it, before taking eBay up on it's "free" offer.

Hello everyone...I’d like to share some news regarding fee changes for eBay-hosted pictures that we’re making in the Collectibles, Art, Antiques and Pottery & Glass categories. The first eBay-hosted picture in an item is already free.
Effective February 18, 2009, we are making all additional pictures, Picture Pack and Gallery Plus FREE for listings in all four categories on the US site (www.ebay.com). This includes all formats and all durations.
eBay is committed to providing a great experience to its users. Buyers in these categories have asked for more photos to help them decide which items to compare and which item to purchase. We believe that more free photos will allow sellers to provide buyers the visual details they need to make these decisions, lower buyer questions, and increase seller sales.
By the way, we're also working on improving the visual shopping experience for buyers with new ways to browse and view multiple, large pictures, which should further increase the benefits of free pictures for both sellers and buyers. Stay tuned for more information about these upcoming visual enhancements.
We’re excited to make these changes, and believe they will enhance the marketplace on eBay for everyone. I encourage you to click here for full pricing details.
Sincerely, Greg Fant VP of Marketing & Buyer Experience
